Modern Foreign Languages

Spanish is taught throughout the school at Sacred Heart.  Simple words, songs and phrases are introduced in Year 1, building up to the statutory curriculum material beginning in Year 3.

Modern Foreign Languages are a statutory requirement in Key Stage 2 and from Year 3 the children are taught using the Wakefield Scheme.  The scheme is broad and introduces children to basic vocabulary and grammar in early Key Stage 2 to writing sentences in upper Key Stage 2.

As a school we begin Spanish teaching before Year 3 in order for the children to be familiar with some basic words and phrases before they start more formal teaching.  In Key Stage 1 the emphasis is on having fun!
