All children are involved in Physical Education at Sacred Heart. We teach PE as a whole school approach teaching specific units throughout the year. The children from Nursery through to year 6 are all actively involved in the unit that is currently being taught at that time during the year.
It is important that all children wear a school PE kit for their PE sessions. Could you please make sure that your child always has the correct PE kit in school.
– To develop competence to excel in a broad range of physical activities

Here is our long term plan for PE. These are there units that are taught throughout the school during which terms.

In the Foundation stage PE is taught through the implementation of building and developing those key fundamental skills that are needed for children to progress in physical development. We have a clear understanding at Sacred Heart that the foundations of physical education begin in the Foundation Stage as our team develop those key fundamental skills that are developed and strengthened as children continue to engage in physical education in Key Stage 1 and 2.
We have a free flow environment where children can access the outdoor area daily. Within the outdoor area are a range of resources to develop children’s gross and fine motor skills.
As the children move into Key Stage 1 the skills that they learnt in the Foundation Stage are built upon. They will:
– Master basic movements such as running, jumping, skipping and hopping
– Develop agiility and coordination skills and begin applying these to activities
– Participate in team and competitive games
– Explore movement and perform dances
– Develop routine and sequence in athletics and gymnastics
– Take part in outdoor adventureous activities
As the children are learning these skills they are encouraged to evaluate their performance, recognise their own successes and challenge themselves to achieve more. They also consider the importance of being healthy.
In Key Stage 2 the children use those skills that they have learnt in Key Stage 1 and apply these effectively to a range of activities. There is a big emphasize on applying skills and recognizing what skills they need for a particular sport or activity. The children in Key Stage 2 will;
– Use running, jumping, throwing and catching in combination
– Play competitive games
– Develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance
– Use compositional skills to create and perform dances
– Engage in outdoor adventurous activities
As the children are developing these skills they are encouraged to evaluate their performance, recognize their own successes and challenge themselves to achieve more. They also consider the importance of being healthy.
In the Summer term Year 5 class attend a weekly swimming lesson at Torbay Leisure Centre. Children are instructed by a professional swimming instructor to achieve swimming a distance of 25 metres. Any children that do not achieve swimming 25 metres receive extra tuition in Year 6 and attend the swimming sessions with the Year 5 class.
Sacred Heart are proud to be a part of the Torbay Sports Partnership. Being a part of this partnership allows children to compete in a range of competitions with other schools across the bay. It allows teachers and children from Primary school settings to work alongside secondary schools and specialist teachers to provide a range of Physical Education opportunities. Sacred Heart is partnered with Paignton Community College. The partnership enables opportunities for children to take part in a range of leveled competitions, receive support and have taught sessions by specialist teachers across a range of different sports, supports the staff at Sacred Heart in delivering well structured and purposeful Physical Education lessons and also provides the school with facilities and equipment for Physical Education in our school.
