Design and Technology

At Sacred Heart we believe that ‘Everyone is Sacred’ and our D&T curriculum provides every child with a real life context for learning. We want to allow children to aspire to think big and achieve big by creating opportunities for them that relate to the wider world. Through the D&T curriculum, children will be inspired by engineers, designers, chefs and architects to enable them to create a range of structures, mechanisms, textiles, electrical systems and food products with a real-life purpose.

D&T is all about researching, designing, creating and evaluating products that will be useful to an identified audience.

Children consider what the product should do, what its function is and how it should look. Often projects are carried out in teams and sometimes individually.

D&T is an iterative process which means that the children learn from any mistakes; changing processes, materials and products as they work thus ensuring the finished product is of a high quality and fully meets the design brief.

All classes benefit from this creative and essential curriculum area. Projects include: preparing, making and cooking food; designing products and structures using basic Computer Aided Design packages (CAD); designing, making and evaluating products such as working lamps and lampshades, bags, Christmas tree decorations, picture frames and so on.

Children learn to use a range of materials and tools including saws, hand drills and glue guns.
