Phonics

Early Reading

At Sacred Heart, we recognise the importance of ensuring children learn to read using a systematic and rigorous phonics programme of learning. We therefore teach early reading using the Read Write Inc. Programme. Using a consistent approach, children are taught phonic sounds, and blending and segmenting skills, in order to read words. Children read and re-read books containing sounds they have learnt, in order to build confidence and speed. Children will take home books they have read in school, and also, ‘bookbag books’, containing only the sounds they know. Children will also learn to write sounds and use them when spelling words.

Nursery

Children will begin their reading journey, with RWI lessons in Nursery. We understand the importance of setting routines in place for successful phonics learning, which is why we implement daily RWInc lessons into our Nursery setting. Adults teach the sounds of the letters in the sequence as prescribed by RWI. Initially learning sounds using the picture and associated mnemonic and then introducing the grapheme. Children will learn to understand ‘Fred Talk’ and begin to blend single phonemes into sounds. We aim for children to be confident in at least 12 sounds by the time they leave the Nursery setting.

Reception

RWI is fully implemented in Reception, but the class will not be split into groups until the initial sounds have been taught. Once the sounds have been taught, assessments will take place to determine groupings. Sessions will occur daily, increasing in length over the year. Lessons vary in content according to grouping and progression, but will always contain speed sound sessions, where children will learn new sounds and blend and segment using sounds children are familiar with.

Key Stage One

RWI groups will be set across Year 1 and Year 2 following assessments carried out by the Phonics Lead. The sessions will occur daily for approximately 1 hour. These sessions will include a 15 minute Speed Sounds session followed by Reading session. Once pupils finish the programme, they will then move onto whole class reading lessons in Year 2.

Key Stage Two

RWI Phonics programme continues as an intervention, across Key Stage 2 for pupils not yet meeting the standard at the end of Year 2.
Read Write Inc (RWI)

What is Read Write Inc?

Read Write Inc (RWI) is a phonics complete literacy programme which helps all children learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling. The programme is designed for children aged 4-7. However, at HPPS we begin to expose children in Nursery to skills that will help them access the taught programme in Reception. We continue teaching RWI to children beyond the age of 7, as we use a stage not age approach.

RWI was developed by Ruth Miskin and more information on this can be found at https://ruthmiskin.com/en/find-out-more/parents/.
